On Friday I accompanied my Mum and Dad to look at the Menagerie group show at Art Work Space at the Hempel Hotel.

My mum loves to snap so here’s her pics, all have a bit of a sepia tinge and you may even spot her reflection…

The only way is Essex!

I’ve been such a busy bee this month and I could almost forget that I did a Craft Fair on May 8th in Buckhurst Hill, Essex.

My main man Martin Bewick was with me throughout the proceedings, it was a fun day out and I enjoyed one the finest cups of tea I’ve had in years – a proper builder’s brew.

Here’s the pics…

‘The Menagerie’

In Shows and events on May 27, 2011 at 4:40 pm

Here’s some images from the private view of ‘The Menagerie’, a group show I’m taking part in at Art Work Space, in London’s Hempel Hotel. It was a really good night (thanks to beloved friends for coming) and I’m really pleased with how my work looks.

The show is on until 24th June, so if you’re in town, check it out – not only will you see my work but you’ll also see fab pieces from Fran Giffard, Izzie Klingels and Susie Wright.

Enjoy!

At the Christmas Markets

In Shows and events on December 13, 2010 at 2:04 pm

Thanks to everyone who came along to the Christmas Markets at Clerkenwell (Exmouth Market) and Camberwell (on the Green) last week. They were great fun to do and it was fantastic to hear everyone’s comments about my recently crafted items. Much appreciated! Can’t wait until next year!

I’ll be taking my handmade cards, prints, bags and other crafty gifts to sell at Camberwell Green’s Christmas Farmer’s Market, this Saturday, 9th December. If you’re south of the river, and/or can’t make Thursday’s Clerkenwell Soiree, then come join me for a mug of mulled wine and some festive gift inspiration.

I'll be in Medcalf, at the Exmouth Market Christmas Soiree

Next Thursday, 9th of December, I’ll have a little stall at Medcalf bar and gallery as part of the Exmouth Market Christmas Soiree. If you like what you’ve seen in my Folksy store (http://www.folksy.com/shops/ellajohnstonart) then come along and take a look. The evening should be a great opportunity to pick up some last-minute, handcrafted Christmas gifts and cards and, with some warming mulled wine and mince pies galore, I’m looking forward to getting filled with festive spirit!

Window shopping at WeAdmire

In Original Art, Shows and events on August 3, 2010 at 8:08 am

Last weekend, after returning from the North Norfolk coast, we took a walk around Shoreditch. One of my T-shirt designs is currently being featured in the window of WeAdmire on Great Eastern Street. Here it is…

It looked happy there among the other designs (cameras, footballers, music stuff), but it’s still sometimes strange to see your work in the street. I wonder why they chose the Great Tit over the Song Thrush? Anyway, you can see (and buy) both designs at www.weadmire.net – there are more details below in the blog. Now, back to work… x

Wedding window papercuts

In Original Art, Shows and events on July 28, 2010 at 10:03 pm

My friends Jess and Charles commissioned me to make some papercuts for their big day. The intention was to ‘dress’ the windows of their wedding reception venue – and the papercuts would also stop people peering in from outside. I cut each ‘panel’ by hand with my trusty scalpel. It’s time-consuming stuff but worth it, I think. Have a look…

I 'drew' all the papercuts for Jess and Charles' wedding by hand with a scalpel

All the papercuts were tailored to fit the individual windows. The paper was light, so as to let lots of light into the room.

From outside, the papercuts stop people peering in.

I incorporated the names of the bride and groom into the design.

...and I incorporated their initials too.

All ground floor windows done!

The wedding reception was held at The Compass, on Chapel Market, Islington. A fantastic day. Congratulations Jess and Charles!

There are some more pictures on my EllaJohnstonArt Facebook page – and I’m now Tweeting as EllaJohnstonArt too, by the way. More soon…

You can buy my T-shirts from www.weadmire.net

In Original Art, Shows and events on July 16, 2010 at 2:28 pm

I sent a couple of my recent bird drawings to the lovely people in the very cool Shoreditch shop www.weadmire.net – and they’ve made them into T-shirts. Have a look in the shop if you’re in the area – but the real deal is the online shop where there are thousands of designs to choose from on all different subjects. Mine are in the Science and Nature section and you can find them by searching for ‘Song Thrush’ and ‘Great Tit’. Reports tell me that the T-shirts are lovely to wear and come in all kinds of sizes and colours. The best bit is the printing technique – rather than a crude transfer print that will crack and look scruffy, they take the design and steam press the inks into the fabric. The detail in the my original pencil lines comes across much better than I expected. Cool! The T-shirts cost £18 and they’re made to order. Anyway, take a look. xx
